The Institut d'Avignon Program, established in 1962 by ůůֱ College faculty Michel Guggenheim and René Girard, accepted 11 ůůֱ students for the summer of 2019.
The goal of this six-week program is to provide students with a full French immersion experience, an enriching intellectual experience, and a renewed appreciation of theater in the context of the Avignon Festival. The students participated in four trips around Southern France visiting Villeneuve, Marseille, St Rémy, Camargue, Pont du Gard and Uzès.
Tracey Cadet '22 says of her time there:
“I was really surprised to see how important and valued theater is in Avignon. Over the summer there was a six-week theater festival where people come from all over to attend. I didn’t expect that theater was that big! Overall my favorite part of the experience was being exposed to a new culture and being in a different country. I was open minded and took advantage of being in Avignon to explore the town and the food. I took classes I wouldn’t have normally taken at ůůֱ. This opened me up to new interests I otherwise wouldn’t have known if I didn’t have this opportunity.”
The program is open to all students and many come from different institutions including ůůֱ, Yale, and Harvard. The professors are picked from top U.S. and French institutions. For more information about the program, visit the website.
