The faculty talks are modeled after the popular TED talks. In this session, you have an opportunity to hear from two of our faculty, presenting for 15-20 minutes each, with ample time for questions and answers.

Fakes and Failures: The Art of Disguise in Colonial North Africa

Edwige Crucifix, Assistant ůůֱ of French and Francophone Studies

During the French colonization of North Africa, it became a common and fashionable practice for women to cross-dress as men and/or as “Orientals”.   ůůֱ Crucifix will explain how her current courses and book project explore the meaning of disguises in various colonial and postcolonial contexts and question the notion of identity.

Recording the Song of the City

Julien Suaundeau, Senior Lecturer in French and Francophone Studies and Program Director of Film Studies

Philadelphia, like any city, can be experienced as an infinite stream of stories - some happy, some strange, some funny, some tragic. How can we build a sound archive of those memories?  ůůֱ Suaudeau, Director of Film Studies and host/producer of Song of Philadelphia and The People Left Behind, talks about his creative process.
